The Biggest and Boldest Social Media Updates for the Second Half of 2021

Updated: Sep 24, 2023

There has been a lot happening in the world of social media in the last few months. One of the most notable events that took place was the re-branding of the Facebook name to Meta. Please know that this name change doesn’t apply to any of the company’s individual platforms: Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, it is only the parent company whose name has changed and the company is immersing itself in what Mark Zuckerberg wishes to be known as ‘the metaverse’. This will involve developing new and exciting technologies that will change how people connect on many social media platforms.

As well as this, there have been a number of updates on Instagram and Pinterest that may be of some benefit to you and your company. Curious to see what these new updated features are? Then please continue to read!

Instagram

  • Sharing links in stories to everyone – When this feature was first introduced, story links were limited to verified accounts or individuals with a specific number of followers. However, this has now been expanded so that everyone can use it. This is a great feature for businesses to use!  Start by uploading content to your stories  select the sticker tool  click the “link” sticker and select the link you wish for people to be able to visit and then click “done”.

  • Converting stories in to reels – Instagram is eager to stay updated with new media trends and this new montage feature would allow you to convert Instagram stories into reels. This new potential feature is currently under work by Instagram and has not yet been released. Is this something that would interest you?

  • Insight on how Instagram’s search algorithms work – There are millions of accounts, feeds and stories on this platform and the search tool helps individuals to see specific content of interest to them. Whatever you search, Instagram will create signals specifically for you and these have been modified by the text you’ve searched, your activity and popularity signals used by others.

  • New messaging cross-app tool – Meta wants to make it as easy as possible for individuals to contact businesses as most people prefer to contact companies via messenger. There will be an option for you to add your WhatsApp account onto your Instagram profile, which will allow people to send you direct WhatsApp messages regarding products that you offer. This is an exciting new update that can help business streamline their messages, making it easier to stay responsive to existing and new customers.

  • Accounts engaged and audience engaged – (please see previous blog for more information regarding this new feature). Click the link here to read

Pinterest

  • New ‘watch’ feed – This new feature has given users an option to ‘browse’ or ‘watch’ idea pins. This new watch feature does not follow Pinterest’s usual traditional search feed but instead is a full screen feed that is full of fresh new content, a feature that is seen as very similar to TikTok. Pinterest is looking to modernise its platform and to excite users with this new feature.

The world of social media is ever changing as platforms companies race to produce features that will appeal to their users. As social media has become a primary form of connecting with new and existing customers, it is important to understand these features as they appear. We will continue to inform you of updates as they come to light, helping you keep you and your business ahead of the curve.
